Salvatore and son Vincent
Vincenzo | Ruth Census Info
Salvatore's Arrival in 1900
He was listed as being 24 years of age. Immigration required him to respond to these kinds of questions. He had $10 with him, was in good health, could read, could write, was never in prison, never was in the US before, was not a polygamist, and was not crippled or deformed. His primary occupation was shoemaker (underlined in red on the manifest below). He said he paid for his own ticket to America and was not under any contract. He claimed his destination was Williamsport, PA. Today's (2005 - 2019) illegal immigration problems cause me to wonder why we do not do what we did back in 1900. It worked very well.

How Did Salvatore get from Location A to Location B?
He went to Williamsport, PA. Vincent told us his dad had to work for someone for a year when he first came to America. He was also a musician (clarinet we think) and he somehow was able to play with a very well known band named Rapasz. An email from our daughter Louise provides some great information regarding Sal. Perhaps that is how he got from Williamsport to Philadelphia. He may have hooked up with the band in Williamsport and gone to Philadelphia with it for their next gig.
1910 Census
After Salvatore's wife (Josephine) died in 1908, their daughter Clara went to live with Josephine's sister Molly at 199 Price Street in Philadelphia. She is listed in the 1910 census (age 4) as Clara Chiaverelli. Notice four in the household were born in Italy and two in PA. Have not found 1910 census with Vincent in it. We think Vincent went to live with his grandfather (Vincenzo) in 1909 - not sure where.
1920 Census
By 1920 at the age of 17, Vincent was living with his father at 5104 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia. His grandfather (age 68) was living there too. Salvatore's second wife, Carlotta, is listed and they have two sons, Eugene (age 5 years) and Frank (age 3 and 7/12). The census taker recorded that Salvatore came to America in 1898, but his Ellis Island passenger record is dated 4/23/1900. He was naturalized in 1905. Looks like his wife's brother, Girolomo Plantulli, was a border in their household. Notice when these immigrants arrived (see column 12 outlined in green). Vincenzo (listed as Vincent) came in 1903, Girolomo in 1904, and Carlotta in 1911.
1930 Census
This census was taken on 5/6/1930. Vincent (underlined in red) was still living with his step mother at 5104 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia in 1930. Vincent was listed as an instructor at a public school in this census. A 1933 yearbook for Northeast High School spelled his name CHEVERELLI as a member of the faculty in the mechanical arts department with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. His father, Salvatore, was listed on the prior census page. His occupation was shoemaker. In the census form columns (outlined in a red rectangle), the "O" means the house was owned instead of rented. The purchase price of the house was $5,000. The "R" means the house had a radio. Vincent's grandfather (listed as age of 75 - green box) was living there too. He had only aged 7 years in 10 years! (see above census) Carlotta (age 39) is listed with two daughters and four sons. Eugene (age 15), Francis (age 14), Elevatte (no age listed), Salvatore (age 4), Raymond (age 0) was born 8/14/29, and Elvira (age 8). Other sources indicated Carlotta had only one daughter (Elvira). The other girl (Elevatte) might have been a relative of some nature. Notice the spelling of the last name - CHEVARELI.

1940 Census
Vincent (at 7425 Andrews Avenue) was listed as a high school teacher earning $3,200 per year and Ruth was listed as a housewife at home with a middle initial of "D". Polly is age 5 and Carolyn is age 2. Vincent had 5 years of college and Ruth had 4 years of college (in 14th column). They paid $6,000 for their house. This was census enumeration district 51-2171 in Philadelphia, PA. The date of the census was 4/5/40 so Vincent's age is 37 (March 1 birthday) and Ruth's age is 34 because her birthday was not until June 29. The census taker struggled with the spelling of the last name. It does not look like CHEVERELLI. That looks like it could be an "s" on the end.
Louise (at 7019 Andrews Avenue) was listed as a teacher earning $2,800 per year and her aunt Anna is listed as sales earning $800 per year. Louise had 4 years of college. Anna (born in Delaware) had either 1 or 4 years of high school (hard to read). Their house cost $5,000. This was census enumeration district 51-2173. View map Anna died three years later. Salvatore's Family
Vincent's notes show Salvatore had two sisters - Petrina and Lucia. Petrina married Herman DiAlessio and Lucia (called Lucy) married a man with the last name of Mondimore. Each sister had two children. Salvatore had two children with Josephine before she died in 1909. They were Vincent (b: 1903) and Clara (b: 1905). Salvatore married a second time in 1913 (See marriage license registration below). Vincent had four stepbrothers Eugene (b: 1915), Frank (b: 1916), Ramon (b: 1929), and Salvatore and a stepsister Elvira. Other notes by Vincent provide some interesting information about his sister Clara and his father Salvatore.
Photos of Salvatore
We have only two pictures of Vincent's father, Salvatore. He is with Frank Plantulli and two other men in the first picture. Frank is on the left, Sal is the second from the left. Frank's sister was Salvatore's second wife. Frank became the second husband of Sal's sister Petrina after her first husband died.

The other picture shows Sal at a wedding. He is wearing a straw hat. He is with his second wife, Carlotta.

Last name spelling keeps changing.
