Details About Vincenzo (Vincent's grandfather)
Vincent Cheverelli was 81 when he typed some notes about his ancestors in 1984. He indicated his grandfather, Vincenzo, was born in 1853. The passenger record at Ellis Island (shown below) indicates Vincenzo was 57 when he arrived in America in 1903. That would indicate he was born in 1846. Perhaps the 7 was a 1 or a 2 and he was 51 or 52 when he arrived. Vincenzo was listed in a 1920 census as age 68 so that tells us he was born in 1852 or 1853. Vincenzo died in 1942 at age 89. Looks like Ellis Island made an error on his passenger record.
Details About Family Name
Vincent's notes indicated Vincenzo's last name was Ciavarelli. The Ellis Island record indicates it was Chiavarella. Vincenzo's son, Salvatore, changed his name from Ciavarelli to Chiaverelli according to Vincent's notes so people could pronounce it. The Ellis Island record indicates it was Ciavarella. When Vincent graduated from college (Drexel) he changed his last name to Cheverelli to further help people pronounce and spell it the way he wanted.

Details About Salvatore (Vincent's father)
Salvatore's Ellis Island record (shown above) has his last name as Ciavarella (instead of Ciavarelli). He arrived from Naples on a ship named Archimede and was listed as a 24 year-old single male from the city of Mistretta in 1900. That would mean he was born in 1876. Vincent's notes say Salvatore was born in 1882. I trust Vincent's notes more than the Ellis Island records. Sal probably was about 18 when he arrived because Salvatore was age 59 when he died June 9, 1941. His death certificate indicates he was born June 9, 1882. Interesting info in this document that our daughter Louise obtained for me. Notice last name spelling is modified from arrival spelling. Click on Salvatore's passenger record certificate (above) for more details about him.
Details About Josephine (Vincent's mother)
Salvatore, in 1902 (about 2 years after his arrival from Mistretta-Sicilia, Italy) married a young lady named Josephine Marchiano who had come to America at the age of 12 in 1896 from Palma-Campania, Italy. He was age 20 and she was age 18 when they married. Palma is the city and Campania is the region (state).
Their birthplaces

Josephine had three older sisters - Amalia (Molly), Caterina (Catherine), and Vittoria (Jennie). Molly lived in Philadelphia after she married Peter DiGiacomo. They had 2 daughters (Lena and Marguerite). They changed their last name to Jacobs. Catherine lived in Brooklyn after she married John Torrio and they had no children. Jennie got married, had 11 children, and lived in New York City.
