Because Ruth and Vincent Cheverelli were teachers, they could vacation for a full summer.
During World War II gasoline was rationed so taking motor trips was not an option.
They decided to build a vacation house on a hillside above Bennington,
VT where they could spend their summers from 1941 to 1945. They had a rather large farm (estimate is 4 acres) and grew many vegetables. They canned a lot of the vegetables for use during the fall, winter, and spring. Polly liked to dig up the potatoes.

Vince and Ruth had help from Polly's Aunt Louise and others as depicted by the drawing that Vincent did on the left.
Polly and Carolyn had fun playing in the barn jumping from the loft into
the hay. They got a ride in a converted rumble seat too. (see below)
