Rohrbach Ancestors' Area |
After Martin Luther started the protestant movement in 1517, there were
many hardships for his followers. A 30-year war with Catholic armies was
one. Excessive taxation and destruction of their farmland added to their misery. In a book about the Rohrbach genealogy, the author did not pinpoint the town of the Rohrbach origins. The family's original last name was von Rohrbach. The word "von" means from. At least 34 villages in Germany were named Rohrbach. The closest one to Heilbronn is about 20 miles northwest toward Heidelberg. It is next to a town named Sinsheim. See maps below. ![]() Purple marker indicates location of Rohrbach. An entry in a family bible indicated
Hans Georg Rohrbach was born in Germany. The Rohrbach family tree leads to me through my maternal grandmother, Florence Rohrbach. Hans Georg came to America in 1732. Some of Hans Georg's close friends and his wife Christina Moser came from Nordheim. Nordheim is about 3 or 4 miles southwest of Heilbronn along the Neckar River (blue arrows) in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. See purple arrows in map below to locate these cities. ![]() Click zoom to see an expanded view of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. |
![]() The areas circled in the map were pillaged by the French from 1619 until 1697. Above map shows the 13 German states. Heilbronn (the city) is marked as a bluish-green dot. The Rohrbach ancestors lived in the Rhein-Neckar Kreis (county) in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Southwest of that area in France was the Alsace area where my mother thought her ancestors lived. Pause your cursor there. Munich is the red dot on the map. In 1957 I was stationed there by the US Army and did not know these facts. If I had known, I would have gone to visit the area where my ancestors had been. |
