Pauline Anne Cheverelli - Retirement Years
MENU
Her trips
After she retired from JC Penney in 2003, we made visits to our son, Brad, in CT to help him do the fixing at his fixer-upper house. Our niece's wedding (Karen) in CA was in 2004. An Ocean City visit with our son Steve and his family was an annual trip for a few years.
Some of her activities
As an avid reader she kept abreast of current events. She wrote to her representatives at the township, county, state, and federal levels. Bridge parties with close friends were about once a month. Visits with friends to local designer houses and to local historic parks took place occasionally. She directed the gardening and landscaping efforts at our house in Cherry Hill.
After Tom's retirement - 40th anniversary at the City Tavern in Philadelphia (1998).
We went to a free dance for senior citizens in 2012.
More activities
Polly was not ready to "just sit around" so she found a way to help at her church with the Sunday School (see list on the right) and counting the collection money. She volunteered to help at the new library when it opened as a greeter. She was an active Cherry Hill Reform Committee member as she gathered signatures for petitions to establish new laws. She went to various Tea Party meetings. At age 80 she was still helping at the church with the Sunday School. She cheered me on (see picture below) when I rented equipment to maintain and paint the house.

Celebration of 50 Years of Bliss
In June of 2008 we celebrated our 50th year of marriage. To tolerate my shortcomings over that period shows Polly was a very determined and resolute person. She combined that with being a very caring and devoted person who was a super mother to our three children.
Visits From Children
As we aged, we did not travel to the west coast. Louise had to make the trips. Fortunately her job required her to attend meetings in Washington D C. She would stop in to see us on the weekends on her return trips. In October in 2014 Louise asked Polly to help with the selection of a wedding dress. On the right is a picture I took of them reviewing the pictures of what Louise had worn at the dress stores prior to making her selection. Tracy (Steve's wife) had taken the pictures. The wedding was planned for June of 2015 in Denmark.
New residence
Even after many visits to various facilities like the place where her parents spent their retirement years, she was not ready to move out of our special home at 148 Weston Drive in Cherry Hill NJ. In June 2014 she was diagnosed with the beginning stage of dementia. The pain from her arthrits in her left knee and the loss of the meniscus cushion (see diagram above) caused her to have knee joint replacement surgery in August 2015. All of this made us decide to move to a continuing care facility like the one where her parents lived. We moved into Gwynedd Estates on December 14, 2015. Scroll through slides
Final residence
Our final residence is planned for Whitemarsh Memorial Park that is just a few miles from Gwynedd Estates.

Here is evidence of how she was appreciated.
She did this until she had to have her knee operation.

Behind them is an art piece that Louise did. Polly always encouraged Louise to do pastels, oils, and acrylics. Polly felt Louise was a better artist than she was. I was pleased by the works from both of them. We had their works on many walls in our homes.
80th birthday party in 2012 was a surprise party at the Tavistock Country Club.
Folks signed their name and wrote a wish on the white board.
We asked all to be ready to comment why they liked Polly. All came with nice remarks.
Brad had about 10 "Did You Know Comments" about his mom's helpfulness in his life.

Above picture shows what we had for party decorations plus some gifts.

The folks who bought our house gave us a really clever gift - a tree ornament with a picture of our house on it.

Brad will keep this.
