Edgmont Example |
A 1714 map of early Edgmont land transactions. An Internet webpage says Edgmont was settled in 1686 by the Baker family, incorporated as a Township in 1687, and named for the Royal Manor of Edgmond in Shopshire, England where the Baker family once lived. Below is a chart that lists some of the initial land transactions. Most of the land owners in 1681 were primarily land investors rather than settlers. They stayed in England.
Robert Toomer sold 480 acres to Philip Yarnall in 1687 in separate deals through George Maris. A recorded deed on 6 Mar 1687 said George Maris of Chester County to Phillip Yarnall. George Maris for £8 grants to Phillip Yarnall a tract in Edgmont bounded by land of William Findloe and James Hernerly, containing 280 acres. In April Philip bought 200 more acres. This was four years after Philip arrived in America and seven years before he married Dorothy Baker. He must have been doing well as a farmer. 1694 and 1714 Philip Yarnall land purchases Richard Marsh sold 500 acres to Joseph Baker and 490 acres to John Bristow in 1684. John Bristow sold 150 of his acres to Philip Yarnall and Dorothy Baker Yarnall in 1694. John Worrilow sold Philip and Dorothy 250 acres in 1714. |
