Birthdate and birthplace
WILLIAM JOHN YARNALL was born on July 3, 1942 in Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Penncrest High School, Lima, Pennsylvania in 1961. He entered Pennsylvania Military College (now called Widener University) in Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated in 1966 with a B.S. degree in economics and a minor in education. He lettered in football, basketball, track, and golf. In his senior year, he was captain of the football and golf teams and awarded the C. R. Chervanic Trophy for the outstanding football player in 1966.
Third of four
Bill spent a happy childhood on School Lane with his many friends, a baseball field across the street, the trolley tracks nearby to flatten pennies and woods to play Army with his buddies.
His Dad was always working on projects to improve the house. The garage on the rear of the house was a big project. Never one to buy new lumber, his dad would bring home 2x4’s and other used lumber for construction. He paid Bill 1 cent for each nail he pulled and the same for his friends, at least this kept them from stealing candy from Greenberg’s Drug Store.
When he was about 11 or 12, the family moved to 477 Hawarden Drive. He met new friends and a new school (Scenic Hills Elementary). A new beginning and a new direction, Bill became involved in chorus. He had new teachers.
