Polly did not want a section for her in my genealogy project. In 2004 I decided our descendants would not be well served if I listened to her. So here are my observations and comments about a very wonderful person. On the right is her factual summary. | Click down arrow for details. |
She was born at home in Philadelphia, PA. Her parents called her Polly. Her parents took many neat pictures. When she was 6 and 9 she was promoted at her Sunday School. She lived in Philadelphia until she was 12. We have pictures of her grade schools. Her parents saved her report cards. We also have pictures of her with her sister Carolyn. |
Her High School Years On the right is a picture of her in a dress she made as a teen. She often lamented the need for corrective shoes and wished she could have worn loafers. She graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1953 where she was part of the art staff for the school yearbook. She was voted "Most Artistic" in her class. She also was a model in a fashion show at a department store. Her senior class picture is on the left plus her driving cards. Polly lived at 519 Plymouth Road in Glenside, PA from 1946 until 1957. Her College Years She was a 1957 graduate from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. She worked as a waitress in Ocean City, NJ each summer to earn money to pay for some of her expenses. Her Early Art Career After graduating from art school, she went to work in New York for a publication called Seventeen Magazine. She worked there for a year as a graphic artist and lived with a very good friend from art school named Nina Prosen on the fifth floor of a brownstone walk-up (no elevators) at 305 West 74th Street in New York City. After I returned from my military assignment in Germany, I tried to get a job in New York City. Then I tried to get a job anywhere. Polly was not interested in marrying a guy without a job. When I got one, we sent out the news and invitations. Her mother's friends held a very nice wedding shower. We used a U-Haul trailer to move Polly's things to Hollidaysburg, PA. Her Wedding On June 28, 1958 we got married. The wedding was at her Lutheran Church in Glenside on Easton Road and our reception was at her parent's house in Glenside, PA. Her father took many pictures that were never returned by the company that was to process them. Her good friend Nina took some really neat pictures that helped with the memories. Some pictures were before the wedding ceremony. Some pictures were during the ceremony. Some pictures were after the ceremony. Many thanks to Nina. Our wedding even made the newspaper. Return to Tom's section. Our Honeymoon in Bermuda After we took a week to get settled in our apartment we took a delayed trip to Bermuda for our honeymoon. She selected the special dishware for our formal dining events. A Description of Polly
