Birth date and birthplace
She was born May 12, 1914 in Harrisburg, PA.
One of four
She was the youngest in the family of Samuel Moyer Palm and Florence Isabel Rohrbach Palm. Her siblings were William Henry (b:1903), Sarah Isabel (b:1905), and Samuel M Jr.(b:1909).
Early records
The earliest census record of her is at age 5 in the 1920 census for Swatara Township, Paxtang Borough, Dauphin County, PA. We have a picture of her with her two cousins - sons of her mother's sister. She looks to be about 7 to 9. Her family may have lived in Philadelphia briefly because her personal history record from Upper Darby High School indicates she attended two elementary schools in Philadelphia and one in Yeadon. Her 1930 home was in Yeadon Boro, Delaware County, PA. They might have moved to Yeadon before she was in the sixth grade in 1926. I wish she had told me about those days.
Very promising scholar
I obtained her school records in 2003. She never told me how well she did in school. She skipped the 7th grade and was valedictorian of her 8th grade class at the Sheffield School in Yeadon, PA. She was an outstanding student in high school. She attended Upper Darby High School for her 9th through 12th grades. She took the Academic curriculum because she planned to continue her education after high school. If she enrolled in the Philadelphia School of Design, she was planning on becoming a dress designer. If she was accepted at Temple University or the University of Pennsylvania, she was planning on being an algebra teacher. She ranked 39th in her graduating class of 314 students at Upper Darby High School. She had all A and B grades in her senior year - the year after her Mother died. She was the homemaker for her Father yet only missed 8 days of school and performed the part of a wedding guest in her senior class play while getting outstanding grades. She was in the mathematics club, a dance group, and active in the Campfire Girls organization. She graduated June 11, 1931 at the age of 17. Her school records indicated she was tardy only twice in four years. Her favorite classes were Algebra, Art, Geometry, and Trigonometry. She was on the honor roll in Oct-Nov 1929 and in her Junior and Senior years.
Change of plans
She planned to go to one of three colleges in Philadelphia, PA. Her school record indicated her first choice was Philadelphia School of Design. She got married to Thomas Vincent Yarnall in East Lansdowne, PA. In April 1932 she had her first child - Thomas Vincent Yarnall, Jr. (me). Her family took priority over her scholastic plans.
Physical characteristics
Her adult height was 5'1" and her weight range was 100 to 120 lbs from high school until she was a senior citizen. She had light brown hair and blue eyes. She always got an "A" in physical education. Her favorite sports were swimming and golf.
Avid golfer
Mother was able to shoot in the low 90s since she got to play often when she visited with old friends of her family back in the Harrisburg area. She often spoke fondly of her rounds at the Harrisburg Country Club during her teen-age Summer visits.
