William H Yarnall Jr (grandfather Grant's brother)
Back

This is one of my great grandfather's five sons. His four daughters (Anna, Mary, Rebecca, and Catherine) were not researched. John (b: 1862 or 1863), Franklin (b: 1877), and Hiram (b: 1880) were not researched. Grant's information (my grandfather) is very limited.

William H Jr (b: 1873) married Elanor Kerrigan in 1907. They had four children named Edmund, Elanor, Kathleen, and Margaret. William H Jr was a drunk according to his grandson Larry.

Margaret, Edmund, and Kathleen were heavy drinkers. Kathleen died of cirrhosis of the liver.

Edmund married Marie Peoples. They had no children. He ran the Wooden Shoe Inn near West Chester, PA. His nickname was Spike. He was the recipient of all of the family heirlooms such as the family bible, birth certificates, and other items. He never gave these items to anyone according to his nephew, Larry. Larry referred to his uncle Spike with tough phrases like "all-American, copper-headed, lint-lined, grade-A prick".

Margaret married William L. Walters and they had a son, William L. Walters, Jr., on 2/29/1940. That is Larry. The Walters lived with William H Jr on New Road in Aston, PA. That might have been the Kerrigan house on the property shown in a map of Crozerville. These houses had dirt floors. That is what "dirt poor" meant.

A 1954 obituary indicates William H. Jr. died at the age of 81 in a convalescent home in Media, PA. That would have been sixteen years after his older brother Grant died (1938).

Larry let me know by email that the Civil War enlistment papers of our great grandfather, William H. Yarnall, showed he lived in an area called Marylandville in Delaware County, PA. The papers had "Marylandville, Delaware" on them. For quite a time Larry thought William H was from Delaware. I have been unable to locate these enlistment papers. Larry also told me he heard that our great grandfather had wounded himself to get released from the Army after his unit got to Cold Harbor, VA. I was able to confirm this story in 2002 when I obtained copies of William H Yarnall's discharge papers.
