My brother Bill (a scratch golfer) was visiting and he walked this golf round with me. He had some great
suggestions on shots. I was relaxed as well as in a groove.
The Indian Spring course had a course rating of 67.8 from the white tees. A course slope was not established until 1988 when it was 111. My opponent had an 11 handicap
and I had a 16 that day so he had to give me a stroke on five holes (5, 7, 10, 15, and 18). Those holes are marked with red outlines on the scorecard. It is not clear to me what the blue outlined marks on the scorecard represent. The black outlined marks are the correct score. The marks in red show 9 holes won, 7 halved, and 2 lost. I do not know what the column with the question mark represents. I think my brother was marking the scorecard.
By the ninth hole my opponent was grumbling because without applying
handicaps we were only two strokes apart and with them we were even. On the twelfth hole he started to lose his
composure with his double bogie. My par to his double bogie on the thirteenth caused him to accuse me
of being a sandbagger. My birdie on the fourteenth caused him to unravel completely. Look at his scores after that. Each member of our golf team got a trophy.
The explanations below are from my golf handicap program. My entry in that program for this score on May 8, 1971 is there.
