1952 Summer Job

The W C Yeager was the tanker that took me to Port Arthur, Texas, Lake Charles, Louisiana, and a very small town in Venezuela to pick up crude oil and bring it to Philadelphia for refining. We had to go around two hurricanes. The waves were enormous.

I worked as a cook's helper that summer. Made some great ice cream for the crew. I did galley clean-up after the crew ate their breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I was able to save almost all of my earnings for college. Made more that summer than earlier summers doing construction work.

When the tanker went for repairs at Baltimore and waited for a berth, we could jump from the ship and swim in the yucky harbor.
