The W C Yeager was the tanker that took me to Port Arthur, Texas, Lake Charles, Louisiana, and a very small town in Venezuela to pick up crude oil and bring it to Philadelphia for refining. We had to go around two hurricanes. The waves were enormous. I worked as a cook's helper that summer. Made some great ice cream for the crew. I did galley clean-up after the crew ate their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was able to save almost all of my earnings for college. Made more that summer than earlier summers doing construction work. |
When the tanker went for repairs at Baltimore and waited for a berth, we could jump from the ship and swim in the yucky harbor.
