North Anna River Battlelines |
The Federal and Confederate battlelines along the North Anna River that are shown
in the map on the right are depicted with blue lines for the Federals and
red lines for the Confederates. Grant's plan called for the path of the battle to follow the railroad lines because it would be easier to move the heavy artillery of cannons and mortars. The Union Army temporarily advanced across the river on both sides of a shallow point in the river called Ox Ford but could not go farther. About two miles west of Ox Ford was Jericho Mills (look at the map on the far right). Grant had to withdraw. Now his challenge was to try to cross at another point on this river or another river to get to Richmond.
