George Grant Yarnall - 1930 Census
Vague recollection
Since he died before I was six, my sole memory of my grandfather Yarnall was being at the kitchen table with him in his home at 126 Berkley Avenue in Clifton Heights and being offered a sip of a very sweet and very tasty beverage from a really neat looking rectangular cut-glass bottle. I have no idea what the beverage was, but it was very good.
Excerpt from the 1930 census
Below is a reproduction of part of the 1930 Clifton Heights, PA census page for Grant's family that was still at home with him and his wife Bridget. Instead of George Grant, he is listed as Grant G. Column numbers are marked. As a child I was told my dad (Thomas V) could not write, but this census (column 17) indicates he could. He did not write paragraphs as in letters, but I know he could write lists of chores he wanted me to do. This census is where I discovered the middle initials of my uncles; John J. and William E. Three children (Rose, John, and Bill) never married.

I appended their job columns to the basic census info. Grant was a beamer, Rose a weaver, John an auto salesman, Bill a carpenter, and dad a shipper. It looks like he might have worked in a school supplies warehouse.
Descriptions of the basic column content of the census page are explained below.
Column 2 indicates the house number as 126
Column 5 names of the family members
Column 6 relationship to head of the family
Column 7 "O" indicates house is owned; not rented
Column 8 indicates the value of the house as $7000 (They probably had a mortgage)
Column 9 "R" indicates the house had a radio in it

Other related info about the 1930 census
Below are the Aston and West Chester census sheet segments for my other aunts and uncle - Ellen (Nell), George, and Marie. I could not find any 1930 info for my Aunt Kay and her new husband Tom Scott. I looked at many of the Havertown census pages and all of the Clifton Heights pages. They got married in January of 1930. The census work was done in April and May of 1930. His parents (James and Marian) lived in an apartment (2F) on Benedict Avenue in Havertown, PA with their sons John (14) and William (11). Tom and Kay were not with them.

Aunt Nell (Ellen) was living with her in-laws (James and Annie) at 268 Aston Mills Road in Aston, PA with her husband William E and two sons. She married at age 21. He was a foreman at a textile mill. His father was a weaver. Rent for the Gorman family was $9 per month (R is in the column to the left of the amount). The other "R" means they had a radio.

Most house numbers on Aston Mills Road have been changed to the 800s since 1930. Old #343 is #832 according to my friend from Aston, Paul Dougherty. He was age 1 in 1930 and lived with his parents Francis and Marie at the 343 address on Aston Mills Road.

Uncle George (with middle initial J) was living with his wife Anna for 6 years (married at ages 27 and 26). They lived at either 105 or 115 S. High Street in West Chester, PA. It might have been the 4th unit in an apartment. This area has been completely redeveloped with new apartment buildings. Rent was $30 per month.

Aunt Marie was living with her husband of 3 years, Edward, and new daughter, Cathleen, at 278 West Branch Road in Aston, PA. This was really Mount Road, but folks called it West Branch Road because it was the road that ran adjacent to the West Branch Creek. The census taker wrote in the margin of the census sheet the unofficial street name. Rent was $6 per month The "H" after a relationship entry indicates who provided the answers to the census worker's questions.
