The Dunes at Myrtle Beach
Back
In 1969 both my brothers were very good golfers. I was starting to play better, but I was not as good as they were. In April after Bill was out of the Army, we decided to get together to play golf in Myrtle Beach, SC.

I was living in Richmond, VA. Bob was living close to Atlanta, GA. Bill was living in Harrisburg, PA. On this trip we played at least four different courses other than The Dunes. On one course Bob found a snake when he went into the rough to find his ball. He brought it out of the rough draped over his club as he came towards me. He knew I was not a lover of snakes. On another course the group behind would tee off a bit too soon and hit drives near us. On one hole Bob lined up to hit the guy's ball back at them. He made a beautiful stroke and almost plunked one of them. On another hole Bob picked up the ball and put it in his pocket. When the golfer came up near us he asked if we had seen his ball. Bob said it was in his pocket and asked him if he wanted to come over and get it. They never hit into us again over the next 12 holes. We had a lot of laughs that trip.
This 1969 picture shows a putt I made for a bogie on the 16th at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The par 4 18th hole (372 yards) was not kind to me.

Looks like the par 3 9th hole (164 yards) went well both years with pars.

The scorecard numbers for 1969 that I entered into my golf handicap program are shown above.
When a group of guys where I worked went to Myrtle Beach, I invited my brother Bob to join us as my partner.

Below is a match we won at The Dunes in 1985.

My handicap was 18 then and Bob's was 14. We had to play well against Dan and Ted who had handicaps of 24 and 27.

I was 9 strokes better on the front nine in 1985 than I was in 1969. Bob was 1 stroke better. I had another 54 on the back nine and Bob was 5 strokes better in 1985 than in 1969.

My best ball score for the rounds played at The Dunes was 79. The 15th became a par 5 and the 18th became a par 4.
