Purple marker on the map at the left shows 118 West Union Street in West Chester, PA. (CHESTER COUNTY)![]() Uncle George was a fireman on a locomotive making $1800 per year. Anne and Edith were some kind of machine operators making $800 and $432 per year. Anne's mother Mary lived with them. Edith was Anne's sister. They rented their home for $28 per month. The circled x indicates who responded to the census worker's questions. It looks like Anne gave George's correct age. Anne had 3 years of high school (H3). George had one (H1). Mary completed the 6th grade. Edith completed the 8th grade. Pause your cursor in each red or blue box for an explanation of the census worker's entries. In the 1930 census they were living at 18 S. Purple marker on the map at the left shows 235 Mount Road in Aston, PA. The house address "235" was squeezed in above a box to the left of the "R" similar to the "246" below. The homes in this section were mill homes for the Parkmount Mill on the Chester Creek. Ellen provided the info to the census worker and it seems she shaved a year off of her age.![]() Aunt Nell (Ellen) was married to William Gorman who was a plush mill foreman making $3400 per year. Son William was a shear operator making $1070 per year. William rented the home for $22 per month. I wonder if both wage earners chipped in for the rent. William's father (James) and mother (Annie) are still living with their son and daughter-in-law. New daughter Ellen was recently born 6 months ago. |
