"Our" Coat of Arms
Unique Info Menu
The "Yarnall" Coat of Arms is recorded with the College of Arms in the City of London, England.

To whom does it belong? A coat of arms is usually granted , certified, registered or recognized as belonging to one individual alone. A coat of arms by definition is unique and may only be borne legitimately by the grantee and his descendants. I do not know who the grantee is for Yarnall.

The College is renowned for the quality of its designs, which artfully adapt a historical art form to modern needs. New designs of armorial bearings – consisting of a shield, helm, mantling and crest – often contain visual references to the accomplishments or career of the person to whom the arms were originally granted.

There is no such thing as a Coat of Arms belonging to a surname.
Coats of Arms belong only to the original grantee. Anyone who can establish a direct male line of descent from an ancestor whose arms are registered at the College is entitled to use that coat of arms.

Such descent must be recorded in the registers of the College of Arms. I have not been able to document an uninterupted line of males from the grantee to me. It is highly inappropriate for one to locate the coat of arms of another person sharing the same surname, and to simply adopt and use that coat of arms as one's own.

The Kings of Arms' jurisdiction covers all those countries of which Her Majesty is Queen except Scotland and Canada, where Lord Lyon King of Arms and Canada Herald respectively have jurisdiction.

Special arrangements apply to citizens of the United States. In 1983 The College of Arms Foundation Inc. (USA) was established to act as a focus for greater public interest in and support of the College's activities in the U.S.A. This foundation even has its own website. Its phone number is 843-973-0390. Although technically Americans cannot be granted arms because they are not Royal subjects, US citizens who are able to trace descent from a British subject living in America before 1776 can be granted  "honorary" arms.

In the UK inquiries should be directed to The Officer in Waiting, The College of Arms, Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 4BT. Telephone: +44 171 248 2762. They also have a website.
